Chesapeake

“Chesapeake Lodging Trust reportedly considers sale
Chesapeake Lodging Trust, which owns 22 hotels, is considering a sale, according to sources. The REIT’s market value was $1.4 billion at Wednesday’s market close …”

Ki chiu (*raise hand*) if you read the above title to be “Cheapskate”.

I did and I blame Monday and the lack of morning cofffe for the mistake.

The Monday Syndrome

IMG_6629.JPG
With a view like this, you will wonder why not more people cycle.
Why is the bus/ train/ road so packed every Monday?!?

This is one situation that I don’t get. Everyone goes to work/school Monday – Friday, but of all the weekdays, Monday is the worst. Monday is the day that I can’t get on the bus/train. Monday is the day that the road’s traffic is so heavy. Monday is the day that everyone looks grouchy (ok, this I know why).

That is why I love to be able to cycle to work on Monday. It is tough to get those muscles going after a weekend, but think about it:

Everyday,  I arrived at work suitably refreshed from the workout and clear-minded after the journey cycling to office. I can leisurely breath in the fresh air and take in the scenery.  And I don’t need to stress on the bus arrival and whether I can get onto it.

I have observed more and more cyclist on the same route to CBD and glad to see the trend toward cycling is picking up traction.

Do Re Me Fa

We were standing at the padang field admiring the new National Gallery of Singapore (NGS) and I noticed the 4 towering buildings to my left.

It was symbolic and even appropriate that four of the bigger local companies have such a commanding presence, namely UOB @ UOB Plaza, OCBC @ OCBC Building, Singtel and CapitaLand @ One George Street.

Parenting 101: Note to Self

Before we become parents, we used to think all those competition on going to the best childcare, the best school, the best anything is such a farce. We will not go down to that level when we become parents.

So fast forward to today and us being parents to this active 20 months boy – we found ourselves besieged with all the comparison and questions.

“Your boy is tall and active…”

” We send our kid to this really good school…”

” I intend to send her to this class that helps develop brain power…”

” We had it all planned, he is going to this really good primary school that we live 1 km from, we also have back up plan of going …”

” Have you started volunteering to get priority in phase 2 something? !!! (E is all of 20 months old)”

” She can already walk when she is 8 months old. now she can do algebra already”

“You must send him to Elton House or Montessori . they are the best!”

Inevitably, we found ourselves sucked into this self create world of race, competition and comparison. A self propaganding world feeding off the insecurities of the parents and the human nature of wanting that climb to the top of the rat race.

So this a really a little note to myself to remind me that it’s does not matters that E is not going to the best school or the most expensive one, the best childcare etc and it does not matter his peers are. It is not the end of the world.

We as his parents have to stop the comparison, the judging and the jump into the competition pool. We should focus our precious little time with him to raise him to be a responsible, polite and compassionate human being that we think he will be.

Does it matter that he is not going hanging around with the smartest kids?

Does it matter that he will not have the pedigree of a famous school network?

Does it matter he is not rich and successful in the future?

Yes it matters, but to us, it is more important that he is that responsible, polite and compassionate human being.image3

It’s Time for a date night with Imagine Dragons

Before Elliott comes along, I always read on literature that couple should always make time to do things together before the baby comes along. And I always think to myself, “what is so difficult about taking some time away from the baby and spend time together?”

Truth of the matter, it is really hard!

Both The Girl and I are working full-time, so whatever time available to spend with Elliott are really precious to us. And we really enjoyed the time spend with him, more often than not, marvel at the new things he picked up every day. That really makes not spending time with him outside work time really hard.

So somehow, the couple time seems so much less important than the family time. Not to mention other commitments to both side of the families, to moon, to housework etc.

By random chance, I came to know that Imagine Dragon is performing at the Indoor Stadium on 25 August 2015 and in a completely random decision, decided we (The Girl and I) should go for it since we like their music and it is so near our house.

It cost a lot of money (in my opinion)  but I thought it will be a good break from the routine we have been going about.

I went to the concert with no expectation given that while I like some of Imagine Dragon’s music but to call me a fan will be a shot so long that it will reach the moon. I know all of four of their songs, so I went with the expectation I might be bored at some point of the concert.

And I was anything but bored. The music was good, the band was engaging and passionate. The vibes and the energy throughout the stadium was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Good thing about going to concert rather than movie is that The Girl and I can still engage in shouting at each other conversation that does not revolve just around Elliott and Moon.  We talked about how different English concert are so different from Chinese concert and how the profile of fan base are so different too. A bit #suaku, we also marveled at how young concert goers are these days. And how Imagine Dragons has fans aging like 6-7 years old?!? Aren’t they suppose to like One Direction? We also noticed that the band is noticeably more humble and thankful to the fans, which definitely ticks all our right box.

It was a great night of rock music, decent conversation and doing something that does not entails changing diapers or playing with trains. To sweeten the night, the journey home take all of 5 minutes.

Oh, did I mention that we each bought a T-shirt before the concert starts to celebrate our fan-boy/girl moment and laughed at those silly fans who were rushing to buy after the concert ended.
